The Treasure Hunt

Genda means marigold. Gulabi means pink. The name says exactly what the bag is, and the bag delivers exactly what the name promises.
The marigold buti, a single flower on a short stem repeated across the cloth in orderly rows, is one of the oldest and most widely printed motifs in Bagru. It appears on the cloth of village markets and on the court textiles of Rajput palaces. It has been pressed onto cotton in this part of Rajasthan for centuries, and in that time it has not needed to change. The form is complete: a full round bloom, each petal rendered with a fine inner outline, supported by three or four serrated leaves that anchor the flower to its stem without fussing.
Bagru printing works from the ground up. The pink ground comes first, a warm, slightly dusty rose that carries the tonal variation of a hand-dyed cloth. Then the marigold blooms are pressed on in amber and yellow, each one placed by hand across the length of the fabric. Then the leaves in sage green, printed separately, the cool of the green cutting through the warmth of the pink and yellow in the way that only happens when the colours were chosen by someone who has been looking at flowers for a long time. The fine detail outline comes last, giving the whole repeat its crispness.
The same cloth is gathered into a double frill that runs all the way around the tote, the marigold rows breaking into movement as the fabric pleats. The lining, a fresh green and white stripe, echoes the sage of the leaves and opens the bag into something cheerful and unexpected.
One of India's oldest motifs, on a bag built for wherever today takes you.

A note on natural variation

Every Genda Gulabi tote is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The buti repeat uses multiple blocks placed in sequence, and the slight variation in how each flower sits against its neighbour is part of what gives the cloth its handmade character. You may notice a bloom where the amber caught a little more deeply, or a leaf where the sage shifted fractionally from its usual register. The rose pink ground will carry its own tonal variation from piece to piece. The double frill is gathered by hand, so its fullness and pleat depth will shift slightly around the tote. This is a motif that has been made by hand in Bagru for generations, and the evidence of those hands is in every piece.
