The Treasure Hunt

The marigold has been travelling across Indian textiles for centuries. It appears on Mughal court robes, on the block-printed cottons of Rajasthan, on the quilts of Gujarat. In Sanganer it found its most enduring form, the marigold jaal, a continuous flowering vine that covers every inch of cloth without leaving a single gap.
This is one of Sanganer's oldest and most demanding patterns. The jaal structure requires multiple blocks printed in careful sequence, each one adding a layer over the last. The vine outline comes first, laying down the framework across the cream ground. Then the orange of the marigold blooms, each flower rendered in the round, petals pressing outward from a tight centre. Then the sage of the leaves, cooling the warmth of the orange in exactly the way a garden does. Then the fine detail, the last pass, the one that gives the whole pattern its depth.
The cream ground is the cotton itself, undyed, the jaal printed over it in layers until the cloth carries the full weight of the pattern. The orange of the marigolds and the sage of the leaves are printed separately, each block placed by hand in Sanganer in the same sequence that has been used in this workshop for generations.
The same fabric is gathered into a double frill that runs all the way around the tote, the marigolds breaking into movement as the cloth is pleated. A shoulder strap allows it to be carried hands-free.
The tote that carries one of India's oldest motifs into every room it enters.

A note on natural variation

Every Marigold Jaal tote is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The jaal pattern uses multiple blocks in sequence, and the slight variation in registration from one pass to the next is part of what gives the cloth its handmade character. You may notice a marigold that caught the orange a little more deeply on one side, or a vine that shifts fractionally from its neighbour. The cream ground may carry a very faint warmth from piece to piece. The double frill is gathered by hand, so its fullness will shift slightly around the tote. This is a pattern that has been made by hand for generations, and the evidence of those hands is in every piece.
