A block-printed cushion cover in cream on a dusty blue ground, with a dense scatter of tiny blooms across the front and back. Finished with a gathered self-fabric frill all around and a hidden zip.
The frilly cushion that turns a corner of the room into a garden at dusk.
A cushion that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

Some prints are built around a single motif. This one is built around the space between them.

The flowers in Saanjh Bagh are small, the kind of bloom that does not announce itself but covers the whole cloth so completely that the effect is total. They scatter across the dusty blue ground in the way flowers scatter in a real garden, not arranged, not repeating in any obvious grid, simply present in every direction. Saanjh means evening in Hindi. Bagh means garden. The name describes exactly what this cloth does to a room.

The blue ground is the colour of the sky in Bagru when the day is nearly over, not quite night, not quite afternoon. It carries its own quiet. The cream of the flowers sits against it with the quality of something seen in fading light, softened rather than sharpened, the edges of each bloom gentle against the ground.

Block printing a scatter pattern requires a specific kind of discipline. Unlike a jaal, which builds a continuous structure across the cloth, or a buti, which stamps the same motif in an orderly grid, a scattered repeat has to feel unplanned while being entirely controlled. The printer places each block with an eye for variety, shifting the angle slightly, varying the weight from one impression to the next, so the cloth reads as natural rather than mechanical. It is one of the more demanding patterns to execute convincingly, because the evidence of any formula shows immediately.

The same fabric runs front and back and is gathered into the frill that frames the cover, the small flowers breaking into movement as the cloth is pleated, the scatter continuing right to the edge and beyond.

The cushion for a room that wants to feel like a garden after the heat of the day has passed.

A note on natural variation

Every Saanjh Bagh cover is printed by hand, so no two are quite the same. The scattered nature of the pattern means variation in the density and placement of the flowers is built into the design rather than incidental to it. You may notice a cluster where the blooms sit closer together, or a section where the cream caught the ground a little more softly. The dusty blue ground may read slightly warmer or cooler from one cover to the next. The self-fabric frill is gathered by hand, so the scatter continues into the pleats in its own rhythm, the flowers breaking and reforming as the fabric folds. These are the marks of a pattern made entirely by hand in Bagru, and they are part of what makes your cushion yours.
