Sale price£30.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan

A block-printed cushion cover in scarlet red and olive on a dusty teal ground, with a dense spiralling floral jaal across the front. A block-printed red stripe on the reverse, finished with matching striped piping and a hidden zip.
Block-printed front and back, so it looks just as good however it lands on the sofa.
A cushion that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

In Sanganer, some patterns do not trail. They coil.
Scarlet Vine is one of them. Instead of the open, wandering jaal that covers most of the block-printed cotton out of Rajasthan, this one spirals, the vine looping back on itself in tight curves across the whole cloth, every loop carrying a different flower. A carnation opens flat at the centre, petals spreading outward in a ring. A tulip bud closes upward, tight and pointed. A small pomegranate round sits between them, compact and full. The vine connects them all, the olive and teal stem winding through the dusty teal ground without pause.
Patterns like this one come out of a long tradition of Mughal garden textiles, where the garden was not arranged in straight beds but imagined as a thing alive and growing in all directions at once. The printer in Sanganer who works this pattern has to think in spirals, placing each block so the curve of the vine continues exactly from one impression to the next. A straight jaal forgives a small misalignment. A coiling one does not.
The red is the boldest colour in the range, and it earns its place. Against the dusty teal ground it does not shout. It simply occupies the cloth completely, every flower and bud in scarlet, the olive of the vine keeping the whole thing grounded.
The reverse is a block-printed red stripe on the same cotton, and the cover is finished with a slim piping in the same stripe, so the red runs right around the edge.
The cushion that fills a room without raising its voice.

A note on natural variation

Every Scarlet Vine cover is printed by hand, so no two are quite the same. The density of the spiralling jaal means variation appears across the entire surface. You may find a flower where the red sits a fraction outside its outline, a loop of vine where the olive caught the ground more deeply, or a point where two blocks meet and the curve continues with the faintest shift. The teal ground may read slightly warmer or cooler from one cover to the next. The striped piping is block-printed and stitched by hand, so the run of the stripe will shift gently around the edge. These are the marks of a pattern made entirely by hand in Sanganer, and they are part of what makes your cushion yours.
