Sale price£45.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan
100% pure cotton

A block-printed tote with a double frill all around, in cream and terracotta on a warm terracotta ground. Lined in orange and white striped cotton, finished with a shoulder strap.
Perfect for the market, the beach, or anywhere you want your bag to do the talking.
The tote that turns heads before you even put anything in it. A bag that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

Gulistan means garden. In Persian, in Urdu, in the vocabulary of every block printer who has ever pressed a climbing vine onto cotton, the word means exactly what you see here: a plot where things grow abundantly, where stems travel without restraint, where the whole surface becomes an argument for more.
Sanganer sits on the banks of the Saraswati river just south of Jaipur, and it has been the centre of fine-line block printing in Rajasthan for over four hundred years. Where Bagru printers work with resist techniques and earthier grounds, Sanganer is known for its precision: tight repeats, sharp outlines, motifs that are detailed without becoming crowded. The climbing floral jaal on this tote is that tradition at full confidence, with large lotus-form blooms, curved stems, detailed leaf work and smaller bud clusters, pressed onto a warm terracotta ground, cream on orange, every repeat placed by hand.
The terracotta ground is not a flat colour. Look closely and you will see the tonal variation across the cloth. That warmth and movement in the ground is the mark of a hand-dyed fabric, where no two pieces carry quite the same depth. The flowers continue without interruption across the double frill, the same block-printed cloth gathered and pleated by hand so the garden spills into motion at the edges. The lining, a narrow orange and white stripe, was chosen to belong to the same warm family as the print rather than to contrast with it.
This is not a bag that whispers. It is one that was worth finding.

A note on natural variation

Every Terracotta Gulistan tote is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The jaal uses multiple blocks placed in sequence, and the slight variation in how one motif sits against the next is part of what gives the cloth its handmade character. You may notice a bloom that caught the ink a little more deeply, or a stem that shifts fractionally from its neighbour. The terracotta ground will carry its own tonal variation from piece to piece, as no two grounds are identical. The double frill is gathered by hand, so its fullness and pleat depth will shift slightly around the tote. This is a pattern made by hand in Sanganer, and the evidence of those hands is in every piece.
