Gulzar Lattice Frill Cushion Cover

Sanganer has a word for this kind of pattern, though you do not need to know it to feel what it does.
The lattice jaal is one of the oldest structures in Indian block printing, a geometric trellis that divides the cloth into a repeating grid and then fills every cell of that grid with a flower. The framework here is a dark teal diamond trellis, angular and precise, the lines crossing at small red medallion points. Inside each diamond the pattern opens up entirely. A bold red bloom sits at the centre, petals pushing outward in a ring. Around it, feathery white leaves reach into the corners of the cell, and smaller pink flowers dot the spaces where the leaves do not reach. Then the trellis closes again, and the next cell begins.
What makes this pattern demanding is that it requires two kinds of precision at once. The trellis lines must register exactly from block to block across the full width and length of the cloth, because any drift in the geometric framework shows immediately. And within each cell, the floral elements must be placed correctly relative to the trellis lines that surround them. A printer working this pattern is holding two grids in mind simultaneously, the geometric and the floral, keeping them in conversation with each other across the whole surface.
The same fabric runs front and back and is gathered into the frill that frames the cover, so the lattice and the flowers continue right to the edge and beyond, the pattern breaking into soft pleats as the cloth is gathered.

Every Gulzar Lattice cover is printed by hand, so no two are quite the same. The geometric trellis means any variation in registration shows clearly against the straight lines of the framework, and you may notice a point where a diamond shifts a fraction or a bloom that sits slightly off-centre within its cell. The sage ground may read a little warmer or cooler from one cover to the next. The self-fabric frill is cut from the same cloth and gathered by hand, so the pattern continues into the frill in a different rhythm, the lattice breaking and reforming as the fabric pleats. These are the marks of a pattern made entirely by hand in Sanganer, and they are part of what makes your cushion yours.
