Ruby Clover Makeup Bag

Prix de vente£32.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan
100% pure cotton
Dyed with AZO-free pigments
Sourced directly from the artisan workshop

A hand-quilted makeup bag, block-printed by hand in deep red and sage on a cream ground. Lined in red cotton satin, finished with a gold zip and our metal tiger.
Roomy enough for travel or your daily routine, compact enough for hand luggage. A bag that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

Discovered on a printer's table in Bagru, the same dust-streaked village forty kilometres west of Jaipur where the wells run black with iron-rich water and the riverbanks carry the permanent stain of a century's dyeing. The clover you see here is one of the oldest repeat motifs in Rajasthani block printing. Four petals, meeting at a point, arranged across the cloth in an interlocking grid that fills every inch of fabric without a single gap. Simple to describe, extraordinarily difficult to execute. Each repeat must land within a few millimetres of the last or the grid breaks. The printer does not measure. He counts his rhythm and trusts his hand.
The red ground is dyed before a single block touches the cloth, the colour held deep and warm. The sage is printed over it, mixed in the workshop to this particular tone. The cream is the cotton itself, left unprinted where the petals fall. Three colours, one block, pressed in a single pass across the cloth.
Once printed, the cotton is hand-quilted along vertical channels for structure and a soft padded weight, then bound with a hand-woven red and white stripe trim. A self-fabric tassel finishes the zip, weighted with our small metal tiger.
A bag that announces itself the moment it comes out of your bag. You will not lose this one at the bottom of a suitcase.

A note on natural variation

Every Ruby Clover bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. You may notice a motif slightly deeper in colour where the block pressed a little harder, or a faint join where one block meets the next. The red may carry a warmth that shifts slightly from piece to piece depending on the dye bath it came from. This is not inconsistency. It is the nature of hand printing, and it is what separates this bag from anything made by a machine.

Our Promise

Every piece in our collection is sourced directly from artisan workshops we know by name. We pay fairly, we visit often, and we believe the people who make a thing should be valued as much as the thing itself. We use natural dyes wherever possible, plastic-free packaging in every order, and we donate a share of every sale back into the craft communities we work with.
