Prix de vente£30.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan

A block-printed cushion cover in rose pink, teal and white on a soft sage ground, with a trailing Mughal floral across the front. A block-printed pink stripe on the reverse, finished with matching striped piping and a hidden zip.
Block-printed front and back, so it looks just as good however it lands on the sofa.
A cushion that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

There is a particular kind of flower that has been blooming in Sanganer for three hundred years and has never once been picked.
It is the Mughal blossom, the full open bloom that came north with the courts of Agra and Delhi and settled into the printing tradition of Rajasthan. You can see it here in the large flowers, petals packed tight at the centre and opening outward in rows, the way a peony or a marigold rose opens in late spring. Around them the vine trails in teal and indigo, carrying smaller buds, narrow leaves and the curved paisley forms that have travelled across Indian textiles for as long as anyone has been printing them.
What makes this one quieter than most is the ground. Instead of the usual cream or the bold colour, Sage Blossom sits on a soft, dusty green, a colour mixed and printed onto the cotton before any flower appears. Against it the pinks read as gentle rather than loud, and the whole pattern feels like a garden seen early in the day, before the heat, when the colours are still soft.
Every flower is a separate block. The pink of the petals, the teal of the outline, the indigo of the deeper shadows, the white that lifts the bloom away from the ground, each one carved by hand and printed in sequence across the cloth. A floral of this scale is unforgiving, because the large blooms leave nowhere to hide a block that lands a fraction out of place. It takes a printer who has done it many times before to keep the whole surface in register.
The reverse is a block-printed pink stripe on the same cotton, and the cover is finished with a slim piping in the same stripe, framing the green like the edge of a flowerbed.
The cushion that brings a Mughal garden into the room and asks nothing of it but to be looked at.

A note on natural variation

Every Sage Blossom cover is printed by hand, so no two are quite the same. The large scale of the blooms means any variation shows clearly, which is part of the pleasure of a hand-printed floral. You may find a flower where the pink sits a little outside its teal outline, a leaf where the colour caught more deeply, or a point where two blocks meet and overlap. The sage ground may read slightly warmer or cooler from one cover to the next. The striped piping is block-printed and stitched by hand, so the run of the stripe will shift gently around the edge. These are the marks of a pattern made entirely by hand in Sanganer, and they are part of what makes your cushion yours.
