Prix de vente£30.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan

A block-printed cushion cover in cornflower blue, olive and maroon on a warm orange ground, with a trailing floral jaal across the front. A block-printed blue stripe on the reverse, finished with matching striped piping and a hidden zip.
Block-printed front and back, so it looks just as good however it lands on the sofa.
A cushion that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

Sanganer warms up early. By the time the rest of Rajasthan is thinking about summer, the printing yards on the edge of town are already laying lengths of cotton out to dry in the sun, the orange grounds glowing against the pale ground of the courtyard.
This is where Summer Bloom was found. The pattern is a jaal, a continuous trailing vine that covers the whole cloth without a gap, and it is built in the round the way Sanganer has always built them. The vine comes first, an olive and brown framework winding across the orange ground. Then the flowers settle into it, soft cornflower blue blooms opening five and six petals at a time, with smaller buds and the occasional deep maroon flower tucked in where the vine turns. Nothing is symmetrical and nothing repeats too neatly, which is exactly what gives a hand-printed jaal its life.
Each colour is a separate block, carved by hand and printed in sequence, one pass laid carefully over the last. The orange ground, the olive vine, the blue flower, the maroon bud, each one waits for the one before it to dry. A pattern this dense is among the most demanding a printer can take on, because every block has to register against the one beneath it across the entire length of cloth, and there is nowhere for a slip to hide.
The reverse carries a fine blue stripe, hand-printed on the same cotton, and the whole cover is finished with a slim blue and white striped piping that frames the bloom like a border around a garden bed.

The cushion that brings a Sanganer summer indoors and keeps it there all year.

A note on natural variation

Every Summer Bloom cover is printed by hand, so no two are quite the same. The density of the jaal means small variations appear right across the cloth. You may find a flower where the blue sits a fraction outside its outline, a stretch of vine where the olive caught more deeply, or a point where two blocks meet and overlap a little. The orange ground may read slightly warmer or cooler from one cover to the next. The striped piping is block-printed and stitched by hand, so the run of the stripe will shift gently around the edge. These are the marks of a pattern made entirely by hand in Sanganer, and they are part of what makes your cushion yours.
