The frilly cushion that looks just as good on the bed as it does on the sofa.
A cushion that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

The buti is one of the oldest motifs in Indian block printing, and Bagru is one of the places where it has been made the longest.
It arrives in many forms. Sometimes it is a single flower, sometimes a sprig, sometimes a small paisley-like form with a leaf curling at the tip. The Paan Buti takes its name from the paan leaf, the heart-shaped betel leaf that appears across South Asian art and decoration in the same way the fleur-de-lis appears across European textiles. Here it has been rendered as a compact, upright motif, a pink form with a white outline and a small spray of sage leaves at the crown, printed across the whole cloth in a clean diagonal repeat.
In Bagru the printing yards sit on the banks of the Bandh Baretha river, and the cloth is washed in the river water after printing, which gives Bagru fabrics their particular softness. The buti block is small, which means a printer covers a great deal of ground to fill a full length of cloth. Each impression has to sit at exactly the right angle and spacing to keep the diagonal running true. It is quiet, repetitive work, and the result is a cloth that reads as calm from a distance and reveals its detail only when you come close.
The same fabric runs front and back, so the cover reads identically from either side. A gathered frill in a block-printed pink stripe runs all the way around, soft and full, the stripe catching the light differently as it gathers.
The cushion that earns its place in the room by being exactly what it is, nothing more and nothing less.

A note on natural variation

Every Paan Buti cover is printed by hand, so no two are quite the same. The diagonal repeat means any small shift in block placement travels visibly across the cloth, and you may notice a motif that sits a fraction off its angle or a row where the spacing opens slightly. The peach ground may read a little warmer or cooler from one cover to the next. The stripe frill is block-printed and gathered by hand, so its fullness will shift gently around the edge and the run of the stripe will vary at the corners. These are the marks of a pattern made entirely by hand in Bagru, and they are part of what makes your cushion yours.
