The Treasure Hunt

Every flower in Bagru starts as a block of carved wood.
The rosette in Rosette Buti is a simple form: five or six open petals around a golden centre, the kind of flower a child draws and an artist spends years learning to place correctly. In block printing, simplicity is not easier than complexity. A single clean flower with no surrounding vine or leaf to draw the eye has nowhere to hide if the block lands wrong, if the pressure is uneven, if the colour bleeds a fraction past its edge. The printer has to be confident every time, across every impression, for the length of the cloth.
In Bagru, the printing yards have been producing buti cloth for generations. The buti, a small repeating motif, is one of the most enduring formats in Indian textile history. It appears on Mughal court dress, on the block-printed cottons exported from Rajasthan for centuries, on the everyday fabric bought at the market on a Tuesday morning. What changes is the motif itself. This one is a rosette, open and round, carried on a short indigo stem with two leaves, printed in coral and amber on a ground the colour of early morning light.
The diagonal repeat is a Bagru habit. The motifs do not sit in straight rows but angle across the cloth, which gives the surface a gentle movement, as though the flowers are leaning slightly in the same direction.
The same fabric runs front and back, so the cover is the same from either side. A gathered frill in a block-printed coral stripe runs all the way around, full and soft, the warmth of the stripe picking up the coral of the flower.
The cushion that brings Bagru's oldest format into a room and makes it feel entirely new.

A note on natural variation

Every Rosette Buti cover is printed by hand, so no two are quite the same. The open rosette means any variation in the flower is visible clearly, and you may notice a bloom where the coral sits a little outside its outline, or a centre where the amber caught more deeply on one side. The diagonal repeat means a small shift in block placement travels across the cloth, so the angle of the grid may vary slightly from piece to piece. The blush ground may read a little warmer or cooler from one cover to the next. The stripe frill is block-printed and gathered by hand, so its fullness will shift gently around the edge. These are the marks of a pattern made entirely by hand in Bagru, and they are part of what makes your cushion yours.

Our Promise

Every piece in our collection is sourced directly from artisan workshops we know by name.
