Pushkar Stripes Frill Makeup Bag

Sale price£36.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan
100% pure cotton
Dyed with AZO-free pigments
Sourced directly from the artisan workshop

A block-printed makeup bag in bold orange and pink stripes, with a gathered frill all around. Lined in pink and white striped cotton, finished with a gold zip and our metal tiger.
Roomy enough for travel or your daily routine, compact enough for hand luggage. A bag that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

The Pushkar fair comes once a year and it does not wait for you.
For five days every November, the desert town of Pushkar fills with camels, traders, pilgrims and colour. Textiles arrive from every corner of Rajasthan, lengths of cloth stacked on carts, draped over walls, spread across the sand in the early morning light. It was here, between a spice seller and a fabric merchant, that this combination of colours first appeared. Orange and pink, bold stripes, the kind of pairing that should not work and absolutely does.
The fabric was taken to Sanganer, where the printers translated the colourway into block print. A stripe pattern is deceptively demanding. There are no motifs to distract the eye, no flowers or vines to draw attention away from the repeat. Every line must be straight, every stripe the same width, every pass of the block consistent with the last. The slight softness at the edges of each stripe, where the dye meets the undyed cotton, is the only place the hand shows itself.
The same fabric is gathered into a full frill that runs all the way around the bag, the stripes breaking into movement as the cloth is pleated. A gold zip runs across the top, finished with a self-fabric tassel pull and our small metal tiger.
Found at a fair. Made in a workshop. Finished by hand.

A note on natural variation

Every Pushkar Stripes bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The stripe pattern is particularly honest about natural variation. You may notice a line that sits a fraction wider than its neighbour, or an edge where the dye softened slightly as the block lifted. The frill is gathered by hand, so its fullness will shift slightly around the perimeter. This is block print at its most direct, and the hand behind it is visible in every stripe.

Our Promise

Every piece in our collection is sourced directly from artisan workshops we know by name. We pay fairly, we visit often, and we believe the people who make a thing should be valued as much as the thing itself. We use natural dyes wherever possible, plastic-free packaging in every order, and we donate a share of every sale back into the craft communities we work with.
