The Treasure Hunt

The lotus is India's national flower. It grows in still water, roots in mud, and rises to the surface to bloom in perfect form. In Sanskrit it is the symbol of purity, of beauty that emerges from difficult conditions. It has been carved into temple walls, painted in miniatures and pressed onto cotton in the workshops of Rajasthan for as long as anyone can remember.
The raj kamal, the royal lotus, is the printer's version of this flower. A full bloom on a straight stem, petals open and symmetrical, rendered in golden yellow with teal detail on a sage green ground. The motif repeats in a clean, measured grid across the cloth, each flower sitting at the same distance from its neighbours, the stems running parallel in perfect columns.
The sage green ground is one of Bagru's quieter colours, achieved by building up colour in careful layers over undyed cotton until the tone reaches this particular softness. The golden yellow of the lotus comes in the next pass, the teal detail following last, each block placed with precision over the one before it.
The result is a pattern that carries the weight of its symbolism lightly. The lotus is everywhere in Indian culture and yet this cloth does not feel heavy with meaning. It feels serene.
Once printed, the cotton is hand-quilted along vertical channels for structure and a soft padded weight, then bound with a hand-woven orange and white stripe trim. A gold zip runs across the top, finished with a sage tassel pull.
The wash bag for someone who starts the morning with intention.

A note on natural variation

Every Raj Kamal wash bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The clean grid of the lotus repeat means any variation in placement is visible and honest. You may notice a flower sitting a fraction higher or lower than its neighbour, or a teal detail that caught the dye a little more deeply on one side. The sage green ground may carry a slightly different softness from piece to piece. The lotus has been growing in imperfect conditions for millions of years. A little variation in the printing seems entirely appropriate.
