A block-printed makeup bag in red, sage and gold on a cream ground, with a gathered frill all around. Lined in red and white striped cotton, finished with a gold zip and our metal tiger.
Roomy enough for travel or your daily routine, compact enough for hand luggage. A bag that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

Rang Mahal means palace of colour. It is a fitting name for a pattern this rich.
The jaal here is unlike the flowing floral vines of Sanganer. This is a geometric jaal, an interlocking lattice of ogee shapes that tile across the cloth in a repeating pattern borrowed from the architecture of Rajasthan's old palaces. The arched windows, the carved stone screens, the inlaid marble floors. All of it ends up in the textiles eventually.
The pattern uses four colours printed in sequence across the cloth. The sage outline comes first, laying down the lattice structure. Then the red, filling the ogee shapes. Then the gold, adding warmth between the forms. Then the white resist at the centre of each shape, the cotton itself doing the final work. Four blocks, four passes, every one of them placed by hand in Sanganer.
A jaal pattern at this level of complexity is slow to produce. The printer must maintain the registration across every pass, the second block landing precisely over the first, the third over the second. The slight softness where colours meet at the edges is not imprecision. It is the nature of the technique, and it is what separates this cloth from anything printed by a machine.
The same fabric is gathered into a full frill that runs all the way around the bag, the lattice breaking into movement as the cloth is pleated. A gold zip runs across the top, finished with a self-fabric tassel pull and our small metal tiger.
The frilly bag that looks like it was made for a palace dressing table.

A note on natural variation

Every Rang Mahal Jaal bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The four colour layers in this pattern mean there is more variation here than in any other bag in the frill range. You may notice a colour that sits slightly outside its outline in one area, or a gold that catches the dye a little more warmly in one section than another. The sage and red may vary in intensity from piece to piece. The frill is gathered by hand, so its fullness will shift slightly around the bag. This is a complex pattern produced by a skilled hand, and the evidence of that hand is visible in every piece.
