The Treasure Hunt

In Sanganer, the jaal pattern is not a style. It is a discipline.
The word means net, and the name describes exactly what the pattern does. A continuous flowering vine that travels across the entire surface of the cloth, filling every inch of ground without leaving a single gap. Small flowers, curling stems, leaves turning at gentle angles, the whole thing interlocking in a structure so precise that removing a single element would cause the rest to unravel. It takes multiple blocks to build, each one adding a layer over the last, and a printer who has spent years learning the sequence.
The crimson ground is dyed before a block touches the cloth, the red held deep and warm. The white of the jaal is the cotton itself, revealed by a resist applied in the spaces where the vine will travel. The contrast is total. Red and white, no middle ground, the pattern reading with the same clarity from across the room as it does up close.
This particular jaal has been in the Sanganer repertoire for generations. It is not a design that was invented for a season. It was inherited, refined, passed from one set of hands to the next, and it will outlast everyone who has ever printed it.
Once printed, the cotton is hand-quilted along vertical channels for structure and a soft padded weight, then bound with a hand-woven red and white stripe trim. A gold zip runs across the top, finished with a tassel pull.
The wash bag that looks like it has always existed and always will.

A note on natural variation

Every Crimson Jaal wash bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The jaal pattern uses multiple blocks in sequence, and the slight variation in registration from one pass to the next is part of what gives the cloth its handmade character. You may notice a vine that shifts a fraction from its neighbour, or a flower where the white resist caught a little more of the ground colour at its edge. The crimson may carry a slightly different warmth from piece to piece. This is a pattern that has been made by hand for generations. The variation is part of the inheritance.
