Amber Buta Makeup Bag

Sale price£32.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan
100% pure cotton
Dyed with AZO-free pigments
Sourced directly from the artisan workshop

A hand-quilted makeup bag, block-printed by hand in saffron and sage on a warm orange ground. Lined in orange cotton satin, finished with a gold zip and our metal tiger.
Roomy enough for travel or your daily routine, compact enough for hand luggage. A bag that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

The marigold is everywhere in Rajasthan. On temple steps, strung across market stalls, pressed into garlands before dawn. It took a printer in Bagru to put it on cotton.
The motif is the full plant, flower head and leaves together, repeating across the cloth in the unhurried rhythm of a hand at work. Each block is hand-cut from teakwood, dipped in dye and struck onto the fabric in measured passes. The slight variation from one repeat to the next is not inconsistency. It is the printer's hand, and it is what you are paying for.
The orange ground is dyed before a single block touches the cloth, deepened to a warm saffron by the iron-rich water that runs through the wells of Bagru. The golden yellow of the flower and the sage green of the leaves are printed in sequence over it, each colour mixed in the workshop. Three colours built up in passes, the cloth carrying the full warmth of the pattern by the end.
Once printed, the cotton is hand-quilted along vertical channels for a soft padded weight, then bound with a hand-woven yellow and cream stripe trim. A self-fabric tassel finishes the zip, weighted with our small metal tiger.
In India the marigold is the flower of celebration, of welcome, of things beginning well. A fitting thing to carry your mornings in.

A note on natural variation

Every Amber Buta bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The orange ground may carry a slightly different warmth from piece to piece depending on the dye bath, and you may notice a motif a little heavier in pigment where the block pressed with more intention. The green of the leaves can shift between sage and olive across the cloth. None of this is error. It is the signature of the printer's hand, and it is what makes each bag its own thing.
