Teal Gulshan Makeup Bag

Sale price£32.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan
100% pure cotton
Dyed with AZO-free pigments
Sourced directly from the artisan workshop

A hand-quilted makeup bag, block-printed by hand in coral and gold on a deep teal ground. Lined in red cotton satin, finished with a gold zip and our metal tiger.
Roomy enough for travel or your daily routine, compact enough for hand luggage. A bag that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

Sanganer sits on the banks of the Amanishah Nullah, a river that has run with dye for so long the bed itself is stained. The town has been printing cloth since the Mughal period and the jaal pattern, this dense flowering vine that covers every inch of the fabric without leaving a centimetre of ground untouched, is one of its oldest signatures.
Jaal means net or lattice in Hindi. The name describes the structure underneath the flowers, the invisible grid that keeps the vines in order as they travel across the cloth. A printer working a jaal pattern may use four or five separate blocks on a single piece of fabric, each one adding a layer. The teal ground first. Then the vine. Then the flowers. Then the detail. Each pass must register precisely with the last or the whole thing falls apart. It is slow work and it requires a particular kind of patience.
The gulshan, the flower at the heart of this pattern, is a full open bloom with petals that catch the coral dye and hold it. The golden stems and olive leaves are printed separately, in the gaps the flower block left behind.
Once printed, the cotton is hand-quilted along vertical channels for a soft padded weight, then bound with a hand-woven red and white stripe trim. A self-fabric tassel finishes the zip, weighted with our small metal tiger.
A bag that looks like it came from a garden that has been growing for four hundred years.

A note on natural variation

Every Teal Gulshan bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The jaal pattern uses multiple blocks in sequence, and the slight variation in registration from one pass to the next is part of what gives the cloth its handmade character. You may notice a flower a little deeper in colour, a vine that shifts a fraction from its neighbour, a leaf that catches more pigment on one side than the other. This is not a flaw in the printing. It is evidence of the process, and it is what separates this bag from anything a machine could make.
