Rustic Gul Makeup Bag

Sale price£32.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan
100% pure cotton
Dyed with AZO-free pigments
Sourced directly from the artisan workshop

A hand-quilted makeup bag, block-printed by hand in white on a warm terracotta ground. Lined in pink cotton satin, finished with a gold zip and our metal tiger.
Roomy enough for travel or your daily routine, compact enough for hand luggage. A bag that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

Not every great block print is complicated. Some of the oldest and most enduring patterns in Rajasthan are the simplest, a single motif, one colour, repeated across the cloth with nothing else competing for attention. The rustic gul is one of these.
Gul means flower in Hindi and Urdu, and this one is as direct as the word itself. A small bloom on a short stem, white against terracotta, pressed onto the cloth in a clean grid. No layering of blocks, no secondary colours, no elaborate border. Just the flower, the ground, and the hand that placed them together.
The terracotta is one of the most characteristic colours in the Bagru palette, the warmth of the local earth rendered in cloth. The white is the cotton beneath, revealed by a resist applied before the ground colour is laid. It is one of the oldest printing techniques in India, the absence of dye doing as much work as the dye itself.
Once printed, the cotton is hand-quilted along vertical channels for a soft padded weight, then bound with a hand-woven red and white stripe trim. A self-fabric tassel finishes the zip, weighted with our small metal tiger.
The bag for someone who knows that restraint is its own kind of confidence.

A note on natural variation

Every Rustic Gul bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. Because this pattern uses a single block and a single colour, the variation here is in the ground itself. The terracotta may run warmer or cooler from piece to piece, deeper in one dye bath and lighter in the next. You may notice a flower sitting a fraction off its grid, or the white resist carrying a slightly softer edge on one side. This is the simplest pattern in the collection and the one where the printer's hand is most visible.
