Gems of Jaipur Makeup Bag

Sale price£32.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan
100% pure cotton
Dyed with AZO-free pigments
Sourced directly from the artisan workshop

A hand-quilted makeup bag, block-printed by hand in amber and rust on a deep teal ground. Lined in teal cotton satin, finished with a gold zip and our metal tiger.
Roomy enough for travel or your daily routine, compact enough for hand luggage. A bag that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

Jaipur has always been a city of gemstones. The old city bazaars still carry them, sapphires and garnets and topazes laid out on velvet in the afternoon light, the colours so concentrated they seem to generate their own glow. The printers of Bagru have been looking at those colours for centuries.
The medallion you see repeated across this cloth is a rosette, a circular motif that appears across Rajasthani craft in every medium, carved in marble at the Taj Mahal, set in silver by Jaipur jewellers, pressed into cotton by the block printers of Bagru. Here it sits on a deep teal ground, the amber and rust petals radiating outward from a dark centre the way a gemstone catches light when you turn it in your hand.
Each medallion is printed in two or three passes, the outer ring of petals first, then the inner detail, each block landing precisely over the last. The teal ground is dyed before a block touches the cloth, held long enough in the bath until it reaches the depth needed to hold the weight of the motifs above it.
Once printed, the cotton is hand-quilted along vertical channels for a soft padded weight, then bound with a hand-woven red and white stripe trim. A self-fabric tassel finishes the zip, weighted with our small metal tiger.
A bag that carries the colour of Jaipur's old city on its back.

A note on natural variation

Every Gems of Jaipur bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The medallion pattern requires careful registration across multiple blocks, and the slight variation from one repeat to the next is part of what gives the cloth its handmade character. You may notice a rosette sitting fractionally off-centre, or the amber petals catching the dye a little more deeply on one side. The teal ground may carry a warmer or cooler tone depending on the dye bath. This is not imperfection. It is the nature of the work.

Our Promise

Every piece in our collection is sourced directly from artisan workshops we know by name. We pay fairly, we visit often, and we believe the people who make a thing should be valued as much as the thing itself. We use natural dyes wherever possible, plastic-free packaging in every order, and we donate a share of every sale back into the craft communities we work with.
