Pink Buta Makeup Bag

Sale price£32.00

Hand block-printed in Rajasthan
100% pure cotton
Dyed with AZO-free pigments
Sourced directly from the artisan workshop

A hand-quilted makeup bag, block-printed by hand in sky blue and green on a bold pink ground. Lined in teal cotton satin, finished with a gold zip and our metal tiger.
Roomy enough for travel or your daily routine, compact enough for hand luggage. A bag that feels like something you found rather than something you bought.

The Treasure Hunt

There is a particular kind of boldness in Bagru printing. Not the delicate trailing vines of Sanganer, not the fine repeat of a Jaipur workshop. Bagru prints with confidence, a strong ground colour, a motif that holds its own against it, nothing apologetic about any of it.
The buta here is a small flowering plant, leaves fanning outward from a central stem, a single bloom at the top rendered in sky blue against the hot pink ground. It is the kind of motif that has been carved into teakwood blocks and pressed onto cotton in this corner of Rajasthan for generations, simple enough to execute cleanly, distinctive enough to be immediately recognisable as the work of a particular hand in a particular place.
The pink ground is dyed first, the cloth stretched and dried before a single block touches it. Then the green of the leaves, then the blue of the flower, each pass adding a layer until the pattern is complete. The white that outlines the petals is the cotton itself, left untouched where the resist was applied.
Once printed, the cotton is hand-quilted along vertical channels for a soft padded weight, then bound with a hand-woven blue and white stripe trim. A self-fabric tassel finishes the zip, weighted with our small metal tiger.
The kind of bag that does not wait to be noticed.

A note on natural variation

Every Pink Buta bag is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The pink ground is one of the more characterful colours in the range, and you may notice it carrying a slightly different warmth or intensity from piece to piece. A buta may sit a fraction higher or lower than its neighbour, or catch the dye a little more heavily on one side. This is the block printer's hand at work, and it is what gives each bag its own character.

Our Promise

Every piece in our collection is sourced directly from artisan workshops we know by name. We pay fairly, we visit often, and we believe the people who make a thing should be valued as much as the thing itself. We use natural dyes wherever possible, plastic-free packaging in every order, and we donate a share of every sale back into the craft communities we work with.
