The Treasure Hunt

In Bagru, the daisy has been blooming on cotton for as long as anyone in the workshop can remember. Not the wild, loose daisy of a hedgerow, but a printer's daisy, a small open flower on a straight stem, rendered with the clean economy of a motif that has been cut into teakwood and pressed onto cloth thousands of times and arrived, through all that repetition, at something close to perfect.
The pattern here places the daisy inside an arched repeat, each flower sitting within a gentle ogee frame that gives the cloth a structure the buta alone would not have. The arch is printed first, laying down the grid. Then the stem and leaves. Then the pink of the flower, the last pass, the colour that the whole pattern exists to carry. Three elements, three blocks, each one placed by hand in Bagru in a sequence that has not changed in generations.
The warm yellow ground is dyed before a single block touches the cloth, the apricot tone achieved by holding the cotton in the bath until it reaches this particular softness. The grey outlines of the arch and stem are printed over it, then the pink of the daisy, the two colours sitting against the yellow in a combination that feels entirely natural and entirely considered at the same time.
Once printed, the cotton is hand-quilted along vertical channels for structure and a soft padded weight, then bound with a grey and white stripe trim along every edge and handle. The same stripe lines the interior, running behind the scalloped pocket that holds the main fabric.
The tote that proves a small motif on a large bag is sometimes all you need.

A note on natural variation

Every Yellow Daisy tote is printed and stitched by hand, so no two are quite the same. The arched repeat means any variation in placement is visible across the full surface of the bag. You may notice a daisy sitting a fraction higher within its arch, or a pink flower that caught the dye a little more deeply on one side. The warm yellow ground may carry a slightly different tone from piece to piece. This is a traditional pattern made the traditional way, and the hand behind it shows in every repeat.
